Coventry Transport Museum: Ghost Town
(What Happened to the Coventry Car Industry?)
Open December 2009
IID Ess CD was appointed to design and build (with RFA Design) “Ghost Town”, a new gallery exploring the dramatic decline of the car industry in Coventry.
The brief for the gallery was to develop concepts by students at Salford University, using bold newspaper artcles and based on Barbara Kruger's visual style.
The resulting gallery immerses visitors in a stimulating environment of contemporary news media and video interviews with angled ramps and set-piece reconstructions. The display uses a variety of sources to present a balanced view of events, encouraging visitors to form their own answer to the question “What happened to the Coventry car industry?”.
